Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

➢ What are the aims of this leaflet?
The aim of this leaflet is to give you some information about PRP, how it works and how it is done.
What is PRP and how does it work?
PRP is the injection of your own blood plasma into the skin of the scalp to promote hair growth. Initially
it was used for rejuvenation of the facial skin and more studies have shown that it can help to promote
hair growth. PRP also has been used in scar repair and some musculoskeletal conditions such as knee
problems. It has given clearance but not licensed for hair loss by FDA in USA and not approved by NICE
in UK. This procedure is considered investigational and has not been officially approved by the FDA for
most uses. Since PRP is a substance derived from one’s own blood, it is not considered a drug. FDA
clearance means that doctors can prescribe and administer PRP if they believe it’s in the best interest
of the patient. There are much scientific evidence that shows its efficacy in hair loss and it is a safe
and low risk treatment.
