What is topical Minoxidil and how does it work?
Minoxidil tablet originally was licensed to use for treating high blood pressure as it dilates the blood vessels. When it is applied topically only 1-2 % of the products absorbs in circulation which is very minimal in comparison with tablet.
We don’t know how minoxidil works and stimulate hair growth. However, we know that it stimulates the hairs to go into the growth phase (Anagen). In addition, it prolongs the hair growth phase and shorten the shedding phase (Telogen). Some study suggests that it may increase the blood circulation on the scalp skin which promotes further hair growth. And few other reports commenting on blocking DHT conversion which has an important role in pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia, please refer to pattern hair loss leaflet).
